Tea sampling from a samovar
Kamis, 27 Februari 2014
I'm just catching up on some activities of the past weeks. I follow Jolie Tea Company on Facebook and recently they posted that they were having a tea tasting of their Doctor Zhivago blend. They were pouring the tea from a samovar. Unfortunately, I only found out about the event the day before and I had a few things to do the day of the tasting. I had to miss it.
A few weeks later, they posted that they were going to have a tasting of their Russian Caravan tea from a samovar in honor of the Sochi Olympics. I made a point to visit the shop for that sampling.
I met the shop's owner and she was delightful. I love her enthusiasm and passion for tea. I told her I wished I could have been there for the Doctor Zhivago blend sampling but I had been busy that day and there was also a snow storm that day. She said yes, it had snowed and it was magical and so perfect to have a snowfall during the tea tasting.
I really enjoyed my cup of Russian Caravan. It was not as strong or smoky as I anticipated.
My trip to the shop was right before Valentine's Day so there were many romance related items for sale. I bought a hostess gift for the Cupid's tea here.
I love all the little pretties in the shop. It is all so beautifully displayed and there is always something new that catches my eye. The staff is attentive but not intrusive. You could say they let you drink it all in at your leisure.
I bought a small pouch of Dr. Zhivago blend. I have a non working samovar, perhaps I will take a photo of it with the tea and a favorite teacup.
It's fun to see all the different blends they offer. Some have such nice names. I want to try them all!
I think next time I will buy a sample size of the Winter Solstice. I have a feeling Winter is not leaving these parts anytime soon.
I love browsing the tea book section. I have a few of the Vintage Tea Party books. They have such adorable illustrations in them.
I always have such a nice time when I go to Jolie Tea Company. If you're in the area, stop by. Maybe you'll get to drink from the samovar too!

Autumn daytrip- Beverly and Hamilton
Senin, 11 November 2013
I have another catsitting assignment. The lovely Miss Tiger Lily is under my care for a few days. She lives in a gorgeous home. Here is the view from the dining room. The trees are still colorful around here. I love it!
Before deciding how to spend my day, I spent some time feeding and cuddling with Tiger.
It was Veteran's Day and so no work for me. I did not go to a parade but I certainly thought about our veterans today. My Father is a World War II veteran. He joined the Navy at age 17 and I am very proud of him.
I decided to take a spontaneous daytrip to the North Shore. I wanted to go back to the Jolie Tea Shop to replenish my tea stash. My friend Debbi accompanied me.
We started with lunch at the Weathervane Tavern in Hamilton. Debbi had been there before. Cute from the outside.
The interior of the Tavern was cozy and comfortable. It was clearly a local hangout. There were not many tables in the place but we found a seat. It was late lunchtime.
The tea shop was closed. So we decided to take a ride to Beverly. The area was so beautiful and the trees were still colorful. A ride along the North Shore is the perfect thing to do on a day off.
We really had no destination in mind. I remembered visiting a cute shop called Sweetwater & Company last year and I knew it was in the area so out came the GPS and we were off to Beverly Farms. We found it!
It was just as cute as I remembered. Don't you love the pumpkin in the urn? It looks so pretty with the bittersweet draping around it.
Debbi loves swans. She photographs them in Melrose all the time so the minute I spied this sign I called her attention to it.
The Cygnet Restaurant was charming on the outside. I loved the choice of colors and the sign of course.
I opened the door so we could check it out. Simply gorgeous! Small sofas at some of the tables. Elegant but comfortable.
We checked out the menu and saw there were swan and cygnet sizes for some of the entrees.
The reception area was decorated with pet photos. I will definitely have to try this place in the future.
We planned to go for a coffee later in the day so we found a bakery called Half Baked. We thought it would be a good place for coffee and dessert. It wasn't open but I just had to take a photo of this sign in their window.
As is my norm, I found a kitty to talk to. I do attract cats don't I? This big kitty came right over to us then went to the yoga studio where I presumed he/she belonged.
We were still searching for a coffee shop but the ocean beckoned. Yes it was chilly and windy but the sun was starting to set and it was oh so beautiful. This was the view from Lynch Park in Beverly.
The sky was dramatic. I told Debbi it's too bad I have to work and miss sunsets most days.
So on the way to the beach/ocean, I spotted a velvet sofa at the side of the road. I have a gift for spotting roadside treasures. I pointed the sofa out to Debbi but then I said never mind we won't stop.
On the way back from the ocean, I decided to stop and take a look. We walked up to it. Well, there's no place to sit on this sofa! But isn't it magnificent? The sign stated it was not free. The seller wanted $50 for it. I took a look around the back of it. Cat scratched. I laughed out loud. I am quite familiar with cat scratched sofas.
I had to pass it up but I still think it was pretty. Debbi thinks I am a lunatic for even stopping. Perhaps I am.
One last look at the beautiful velvet sofa with no seating. I wonder how much it would cost to reupholster it?
Well, we finally found a local coffee place. Atomic Cafe on Cabot Street in Beverly did not disappoint. Debbi had the mocha chai latte. It looked spectacular.
I had a cappuccino and a ginger molasses cookie. The cookie was huge, perfectly chewy, and intensely flavorful. I knew when I looked at it that it would be delicious. It had those deep cracks in it and sugar you can see on the top. So yummy!
I drove Debbi back to her house and then I went back to give Tiger Lily her evening meal and her daily dose of lovins.
I had a perfectly wonderful day.

Jolie Tea Company, Hamilton
Rabu, 16 Oktober 2013
The day we saw the coaches, we decided to explore downtown Hamilton. We ate at the Black Cow Restaurant and then we went to the tea shop next door.
Jolie Tea Company is a lovely shop located at 26 Bay Road in Hamilton. The exterior was inviting and when we entered the store we were given a free tea sample. As you can see, there were many varieties of tea to purchase.
I almost opted for the Autumn Cranberry but decided to stick with my fave, Earl Grey. I also bought a canister of Lavender Earl Grey for a friend.
The store was well merchandised, neat and clean, and very easy to navigate. Books in one area, tea canisters in another, etc.
I loved these tea towels but I wanted to buy a book so the tea towels will have to wait for another visit. Sweet, aren't they?
This is Kyra, the store manager. She was very professional and knowledgeable. She answered by many questions about the shop. The store has been open for three years. And I honestly don't know how this gem slipped by me.
There were some very pretty cups and teapots for purchase. This display had a museum quality to it.
I could have purchased so many Christmas gifts at this shop. I know my friends would have loved it. Jolie Tea offers tea tastings and tea classes and I may sign up for one in the future.
Next time you visit Hamilton stop by Jolie Tea Company and say hi to Kyra and Liz. If you can't visit in person click here to visit their website.

The Historic Horse Drawn Coaches of Hamilton
Kamis, 10 Oktober 2013
A friend posted on Facebook that the coaches were coming to Hamilton. I thought it might be Coach Bellichik of the Patriots so I read on. I thought it would be great to hear him speak. It turned out it was about historic horse drawn coaches that were going to visit the Myopia Hunt Club in Hamilton, Massachusetts. Even better!
I called my friend Debbi who has a love of horses and asked her to go with me. So I took a day off from work and we headed up to Hamilton. After a quick Starbucks salted caramel mocha we headed to the Myopia Hunt Club.
I am guessing the little jaunt to Starbucks cost us some time as the coaches were nowhere to be found at the Hunt Club. I had looked online the day before and I knew the route the coaches were taking to Appleton Farms. We headed down Cutler Rd and lo and behold....
We got stuck behind the coaches and the police escort. Those flashing lights can be really annoying! Then it started to rain, hard. And the horses pooped on the road, a lot! I thought wow what a fun day!
The coaches stopped at Appleton Farm and we were allowed to see the coaches and the horses and drivers. The drivers were friendly to us and were agreeable to photo opportunities.
At this point, I was in heaven. The setting was gorgeous. The foliage was fantastic. The horses were majestic and the coaches were spectacular. And then the downpour started.
This coachmen wanted to take a photo of me taking a photo of him. I had to constantly hide my camera beneath my coat because it was getting drenched. I can't believe the skies opened up almost the minute we got out of the car! Oh well, we would not be deterred. We were going to see each and every coach.
I especially liked the white horses. They had their raincoats on too. They took a rest while some of the drivers had a picnic.
The coaches were so regal. And shiny! You can tell they were lovingly cared for.
Everyone had their jobs. Some just stood with the horses as others were on the coaches. There was one accident. We saw an ambulance arrive and I wondered what was going on. We were told by a man who was there taking photos that one of the coachwomen had slipped on the wet step of the coach, fallen and got her foot caught in one of the coach's wheel's spokes. It was suspected she broke an ankle or leg. I hope it wasn't that serious.
As I said the setting was breathtaking. Old stone walls, dirt paths, beautiful foliage. Such photo opportunities! I think I was overstimulated.
Oh look! The Queen made a special appearance just for us. It's fun hanging out with the horsey set.
The ladies looked good even in their raincoats. I wish we could have taken a ride in the coach but we were just there to look.
With horses and coaches surrounding me, I felt as if I were back in time or perhaps even on a movie set.
Imagine how old the stone walls are. This part of the North Shore is so beautiful!
This woman agreed to pose with Ellie the horse. Funny I didn't catch her name but I remember the horse named Ellie.
My friend Debbi posed with Ellie. Debbi's mother is named Ellie so this horse was the most special to us.
You have to admit, this horse is really beautiful. All the horses were so gentle. We were allowed to touch them.
The picnic was actually a boxed lunch for the coachmen but a few of them had lunch under a tent.
This coachmen looked a little scary. He definitely could have been from another time.
Lunch on the go as it was almost time to leave. The horses had rested and everyone had eaten.
Still raining at this point and getting muddy. So glad I wore my suede shoes. They have since recovered.
These ponies are German and so adorable. What fabulous coats they have!
This border collie was safe from the rain in this old fashioned car. Lucky dog!
We heard that the coaches would be crossing this little bridge on their way out so we staked out our spots.
The border collie was the first to arrive over the bridge. I was all set to get some awesome shots when a photographer came up to me to say I was going to be in all her shots. She said she was getting paid for this shoot and so I offered to move.
Since I moved from my spot, most of my shots ended up being too close. I like this one anyway.
The last coach left Appleton Farms, we were hungry and soaked. We had a lovely time at the coaching event and now it was time for lunch at the Black Cow.
Don't forget to come back for my next post about my trip to Concord, Massachusetts.
