Architectural detail love

Selasa, 03 April 2012

I must say I do love architectural detail. If I'm driving and I spy a really ornate house I have to either stop the car to get a better look or I make note of the street for a future visit.

The other day I took a little walking tour of Winchester, it's not too far from where I live but oh so much more affluent.

This house caught my eye because of it's color and the beautiful detail at it's entrance.

Here's a closer look at the porch railing.. Love the colors.

And the trim is just magnificent. So elegant and historic looking.

This is called dental work I think and it adds some interest to the roof line.

I love a nice balcony.  This one is obviously more for show than function. Aren't those cool windows?

I've always wanted a home with turrets. It must be so beautiful on the inside too.  Maybe it has a curved window seat.

I'm into archways too. They add such grace to an entrance or porch. I would love to add some archways to my condo.

Oh yeah, another turret. Can you believe all these homes are within walking distance of each other?
What a neighborhood!

The front of the houses is pretty terrific too!

More lovely windows and cool architectural details. I like the color too.

Don't you adore stained glass windows? This home was obviously restored. I am glad they kept the stained glass windows.

As I walked around the neighborhood,  I was being watched! Can you see a little face in the window?

Ooh, more interesting mouldings and fab windows. What a joy to see so many gorgeous homes!

Again, my little kitty friend's home. Tudor style.

A rooftop deck and a solarium? Some people are so lucky, aren't they?

And lots going on here. Pillars, gables, color. I love it all.

A closeup of the entryway.

Interesting mini roof. Love the bay windows on the second floor too. Or do they call them bump outs?

Whatever they're called. They certainly caught my eye. My kitties would love sitting there looking out at the world below.

Gee we went from a Tudor style home a few photos back to a Spanish influence. That's what I love about New England, the older homes have variety and character. No cookie cutter homes in this neighborhood.

I don't even mind the pink color on this house. It kinds of suits it.

I know you wanted to see what the front looked like.

And this home reminds me of homes in Salem that are centuries old.

A chimney surrounding a stained glass window.  I am glad they didn't cover it up.

I love this porch, pretty detail and colors.

Same house but looking at the second floor. Cool scroll work, huh?

A bit of a chalet look to this one. I like the little window in the roof and the snow effect.

Here it is in close up.

This is one of my favorite houses.  Not wild about the color though.

This is one of the houses I would definitely stop the car to view.

Don't you love that cupola?

All the homes in the neighborhood were well kept.  As I walked around, I saw lots of houses getting some TLC.

I think this is one of my favorites as it reminds me of my beloved Gothic cottages in Martha's Vineyard.

It certainly looks like a gingerbread cottage.

Stained glass windows and scroll work, divine!

Here's the last home I viewed.  Love the architectural detail around the doorway. So pretty against the red door. This home was very old but well preserved

I hope you enjoyed your walking tour of Winchester.  Do you have a favorite home?

Full Flower Moon and Pink Saturday

Jumat, 08 Mei 2009

Welcome to all Pink Saturday participants. I am combining my Pink post with some photos I took in Concord today. My friend Lori Lee and I decided to do lunch and shopping but first we visited this cemetery. We both love to look at old gravestones.

The carvings are so beautiful on these old stones.

Many of them were very ornate and I loved all the angels.

The full moon name of May is the Full Flower Moon. Quite simply, May brings bright brushes to paint the earth canvas with infinite flowers. In the full moon light of this month, the flowers are said to grow at night, and even dance in honor of the moon. (info from What's-Your-Sign.com)
For my pink post I focused on the profusion of pink flowering trees I saw this week. Winchester had some beauties.

This was taken along the path of the Duck Pond. Don't ask me to identify the species.

Again, lots of pinks at the Duck Pond.

Some of the pink blooms were so delicate.

But one branch was so heavy it almost hit the sidewalk!

Peaceful scene by the Pond.

Another shot from Concord. It was a gorgeous Spring day. I introduced Lori Lee to Nesting on Main, my new favorite shop. Sunshine after a cloudy, rainy week, warm temperatures, a fabulous day to take off from work.
Thanks to Beverly of How Sweet the Sound for coordinating Pink Saturday. Click on the Pink Saturday button on the sidebar to see a list of participants.
Happy Mother's Day to all of you hard working moms. I hope you have a relaxing weekend.

Fresh memory card and fresh snow

Minggu, 11 Januari 2009

We had another snowstorm last night. I think it has snowed nearly every day since the official start of Winter. The most recent storm did not produce as much snow as expected so the roads were cleared rather easily and I was out and about in no time.
Armed with a shiny new memory card for my Fuji, I headed to Winchester for a photographic journey. If you've read prior posts on this blog you will know that I love Winchester. It is a beautiful town and I thought it would be especially beautiful with freshly fallen snow.

I like to photograph churches in the snow and especially at the holidays. Today, the churches still had their Christmas decorations up which was great.

I love how the snow got lodged in between the stones on the facade of the church.

The church was set up on a hill so I took a view of the "village" below. That tall building is Winchester's Big Ben. That's what we used to call it when we were little.

I met this cutie outside of Starbucks. As fashionable as she was in her little pink coat, she
was not allowed inside Starbucks. I would have let her in.

She was watching me drink my Cafe Mocha. Her owners had left her some food while they
drank their coffee inside.

I told the baristas to make my Mocha real pretty because it was going to be photographed and put on my blog. I think they did a fine job!

The snow really added to the whole Starbucks experience today. Warm inside, cold outside.
Good people watching from my windowside table.

The people were just walking by. No one was sitting on these benches today. Or anytime soon
according to the 5 day forecast. Brrrr!

Even the duck pond had frozen. The ducks must have headed to Starbucks to warm up!

Guess this is where I stop. I don't want the local firefighters to pull me from the ice.
Actually I saw them go out on a call so no risky phototaking today.

Just snow no ice on this side of the street.

Oops, this isn't Winchester. This is my hometown. Our town common is still decorated for
Christmas.

The gazebo is newly built by the Rotary Club, the Town Hall is in back of it. At this point, I was chilled to the bone. The Cafe Mocha was a temporary fix. Time for me to go home and get worked up over the football playoffs. Did I mention the New England Patriots didn't make it
to the playoffs this year? Oh yeah, I think I did! Well it still stings!
Tomorrow it's back to work. A good week to all. We'll talk soon.
